Spotlight on…Topic 7: Local Community Prosperity

Strengthening prosperity in the local community

Tourism in or around Protected Areas (PAs) has the potential to be a highly effective mechanism to support the generation and redistribution of wealth, from more urbanized areas towards rural communities which tend to have fewer employment opportunities.

When mechanisms are in place to make sure local communities benefit from visitation to a PA, this can also help generate stronger levels of local support for the PA.

Training module 7 will look at some of the key concepts and mechanisms that can be used to support local prosperity in or around Protected Areas. This module elaborates on topics such as tourism ‘leakages’ versus tourism ‘multipliers’, building a shared identity, developing local partnerships, and supporting local businesses and employment.
